5 Best Tips for Camping With Kids

Planning is of the utmost importance when bringing your children along for a camping trip. While you might be up for an out-of-nowhere camping expedition, your children might not be ready for such a sudden change in routine. Here are some tips to ensure you and your kids have a fantastic time outdoors.

Camping with Kids

Preparation Is Key

Tell them what to expect, reserve a camping area ahead of time, and pack accordingly. Let them bring along a favorite toy or comfort item so that the new environment does not seem so foreign to them. You can even involve your kids and let them be part of picking your destination. Surf the internet together and discuss the pros and cons of your different options. Once you have a location in mind, do some internet sleuthing to research the area you are planning to visit and figure out the best camping sites, as well as some alternate activities your family could enjoy should the weather turn nasty.

Be Organized

Make a list of all of the items you need to bring with you. Even the things that you think you would never forget can slip your mind when you are trying to get a car full of your family out and onto the road. A good responsibility developing exercise is to let your kids pack their bags using a list that you wrote down for them. Of course, make sure to double-check their bags before you leave so no toothbrushes are left behind.

Call a family meeting as soon as you get the site set up and make sure everyone is familiar with the campsite number and some landmarks that could lead them back to the site should anyone get lost.

Act The Way You Want Your Kids To

Also, you need to keep in mind that your children will be taking cues from you when it comes to how to act and react in this new environment. Make sure you are excited and have a positive attitude, even when things do not go exactly the way you wanted them to. Be prepared to be stressed out and tired, but also be prepared to keep a smile on your face.

Get Your Kids Involved

That being said, it is always a positive move to get your kids involved in the process of camping. For example, you could let them help gather the firewood, show them how to cook some of the food or guide them in cleaning up the campsite before you leave. Encourage them to work on their own and with you as well. Kids like to feel important, so make sure to praise them once they have completed their assigned task.

Be Flexible

While it’s great to plan, keep in mind that a big part of the camping experience is being able to be flexible and allowing yourself and your family to change plans on the spot. Don’t try to be overly controlling of the vacation. Let your kids have fun with the new world around them. Explore the campsite together. Look at bugs and birds and plants through their eyes. But most of all, enjoy your time together as a family.
